Tatami Room
|
|
Tatami is made from a special grass grown just for making this mat. During harvesting, the grass will go through a cleaning process, drying and put in a machine for the weaving process.
There is a certain fresh smell from the grass if a room is just fixed with new tatami boards.
Tatami board comes in stardard sizes of 1m by 2m. A room is measured by the numbers of tatami board in it. Like 3 tatami board is 3m by 2m room or 6 board is 4m by 4m room.
Tatami rooms do not have the modern kind of tables and chairs. People sit on a seating-cushion on the grass-mat. Tatami rooms have minimal furnishing, the least the better. It is not supposed to be cluttered with decorative objects.
See www.pemastautin-okinawa.blogspot.com for some more photos on tatami rooms.

Story-telling Contest-Puppies for sale
|
|
Tomohiko got second place for the Inter-School Story-telling Contest held on 19-6-2004.
Ishimine Junior High School-Tomohiko Kudaka.
A store owner was tacking a sign above his door that read, "Puppies for Sale." Signs like that have a way of attracting small children, and sure enough, a little boy appeared under the store owner's sign "How much are you going to sell the puppies for?" he asked.
The store owner replied, "anywhere from $30 to $50."
The little boy reached in his pocket and pulled out some change. "I have $2.37," he said.
"Can I please look at them?"
The store own smiled and whistled, and out of the kennel came Lady, who ran down the aisle of his store followed by five teeny, tiney balls of fur. One puppy was lagging considerably behind. Immediately the little boy singled out the lagging, limping puppy and said,
What's wrong with that little dog?"
The owner explained that the veterinarian had examnined the little puppy and discovered it didn't have a hip socket. It would always have limp. It would always be lame. The little boy became excited.
"That is the little puppy that I want to buy."
The store owner said, "No, you don't want to buy that little dog. If you really want him, I'll just give him to you."
The little boy got quite upset. He loooked straight into the store owner's eyers, pointing his finger, and said, "I don't want you to give him to me.. That little dog is worth every bit as much as all the other dogs and I'll pay full price. In fact, I'll give you $2.37 now, and fifty cents a month until I have him paid for."
The store owner countered, "You really don't want to buy this little dog. He is never going to be able to run and jump and play with you like the other puppies."
To this, the little boy reached down and rolled up his pant leg to reveal a badly twisted, crippled left leg supported by a big metal brace. He looked up at the store owner and softly replied,
"Well, I don't run so well myself, and the little puppy will need someone who understands!"

A Day at C*mp F*ster.
|
|
This is one of the army camps in Okinawa. They all look the same everywhere, so if you''ve been to one, you've been to all!
On normal working days, you don't see those army boys on the pavement but today is saturday and they came in flocks to ogle at the half-naked girls walking by.
The shopping malls on base are not crowded because only military staff and their families can shop there.

Tedako Festival.
|
|
Tedako festival is held every summer by the Urasoe City Office. It's actually festival of drums, whereby many events are organised. Performances and rock band on stage, drum-beating competition between schools and companies, stalls selling all kinds of food and and gaming stalls. Mostly young people and young parents with small children crowd this event.
The girls put on their best yukata ie kimono for summer.
Many of them drink beer and make it like a big party for the whole families, doing picnic on the ground while waiting for the firework display.
I am less interested in the fireworks and concentrate my fotos on the colorful yukata and happy people there. Enjoy it!

The Flee-market is equivalent to the Car Boot Sale in England. Just set up a booth and sell whatever used items.
This is Chatan, very near the US military base, Foster. The army boys come here to eye the girls and the girls come here hoping to pick up some chunky army boys to play.
Some come here to pick up cheap household bargains. Some come here to show off their attire and body, some come here to eat and some like us...come here to laugh at them!!!

Pesta Perjumpaan Indonesia-Okinawa.
