NewYear Performance at Shuri Castle
Traditional Ryukyu outfit for the castle
Main entrance of Shuri CastleーA world Heritage.
View all 8 photos...
Today is the first day of the international calendar of 2007. I heard on TV, some musical performance and a historical parade with traditional costumes of Ryukyu's king is on at the Shuri Castle. So just for the sake of some walking to keep my body in tune, I decided to walk to the Castle. Ayumi wanted to come walking with me, so we took the long walk about 1.8 km and went shopping on the way back.
While we were walking back, we bumped into Tomo, my son. He was doing his letters and cards round that neighbourhood. His posman work is only for 2 weeks, during the new year school vacations.
It was the best thing to happen to me. Just to bump into him in his post office uniform and the bicycle.

Eid 1427-24Oct.2006

Ladies line-up after solat
Pretty faces after solat
All green for eid
View all 24 photos...
Eid il fitri has always been the same in my house every year. We met for eid solat at Ryukyu Univ. Internation Hall, solat and share some food together. Then, some friends usually from the base visit my house.
This year there is no public holiday on eid. The malay students visited only after they finished classes in the evening. So, morning after solat, the people from the base visited my house, then a few very close Japanese lady friends in the afternoon.
This year Eid, Shida and Esah represents JICA for eid at my house. Every year, if you look closely at my eid's photos, there are different faces from JICA.
The food were all gone by night fall and the next day, I laid flat on my bed...relieved!

InsyaAllah, rindu berbual dgn emak sani sampai pagi. Nak keluarkan semua bakat terpendam loghat noghori. Tapi belum tentu balik hujung tahun ke tidak.
Selamat hari raya maaf zahir batin, halalkan mee goreng, roti canai dan berbagai kuih masa breakfast dulu.

My garden bounty in summer 2006

Date palm
guava
guava
View all 14 photos...
See what my garden grows in summer 2006.
The date palm has grown for 6 years and we still have a longgg time to get dates to eat from the garden.
The guava is the Japanese variety which is pink inside when ripe.
This year, my husband managed to grow Malaysia variety of the bitter gourd with success. It is different from the Japanese variety in taste, look and colour.
My father-in-law managed to get the lemon grass to multiply this year when he planted it in a plot with abundant sunshine.
For the curry leaf herb, my husband re-potted it and it looks really strong now.
The pandan leaf herb started with only one tiny branch and now it looks like bending because about 6 roots sprout from the same tiny branch.
It becomes heavy on top and looks quite unbalance, so I have to support it with a straight stick to make it stand upright.
The sugar cane looks strong and heavy this year, compared to last year's. Last year sugar cane was just thinly sticky thing.
I don't grow the coconuts. I found it at the vegetable shops and nobody buys it. So, we bought 4 pieces and I have wonderful time breaking my ramadan fasting drinking its water and some fresh scrapes.
My husband just push a stick of dragon fruit plant 2 years ago. This month, it is flowering. The flower only blooms in one night and wilted the next morning. I shoot this bloosom an hour too early. Actually, after this shot, the flower bloomed twice this big.
When and if there is dragon fruits after this blossom, will up it as well.

Serai kalau di tanam di tanah hidup tak musim sejuk nanti. Isma tinggal di NL avrg sejuk dalam 3 to 5 celcius.

Regards,
Isma

aikk, nama kamu juga kak lela?
Serai tak boleh hidup dalam 3-5c sebab masa itu tanah jadi air batu. Kena aleh serai itu ke dalam pasu dan letak dalam rumah.

Yomitan Pottery Village

One of the galleries.
Oven on the hill.
Ayumi.
View all 9 photos...
It was a nice laid-back saturday afternoon and ayumi (my second daugher) decided to drive me to a potter's village. It was a nice 30-minute drive. Yomitan Pottery village is set on a hill, quite apart from the residential area, maybe because of the big oven. The oven is big to burn the pottery and maybe there are more than one oven.
I went in from one gallery to the next with different potter's unique design. I am looking for drinking cups that have unique making and features, not the smooth type.
Anyway, I cant find what I want and we stopped for some drinks in a cafe that served the pottery that they sell.

Herbs behind the house.

Curry plant
Pandan plant
Tumeric plant
View all 5 photos...
These are some of the herbs that my hubby helped to grow behind our house. The curry plant is a must for making seafood and fish curry. The leaves will give a strong aroma to the curry.
The tumeric plant is used for the leaves as well as the root for cooking. The young leaves is dropped in the gravy for that heavenly, beautiful aroma and the root is grind and mix in the recipe to give a strong bland to the cooking.
The galangal or lengkuas in the malay language serves the same purpose as the tumeric. Most thai and malaysian cooking use loads of this root.
The pandan plant has sweet and grassy aroma. It is mainly used for the aroma of the leaf. Most malaysian desserts need the leaf. Grind the leaves and mix the essence in the dessert and use as any normal recipe. It has a deep fresh, green color and look very appetising.

Salam, geram tgk all the plants. Segar bugar. Tue 18-Jul-2006 05:46
